There is a widespread belief that low-yielding organic agriculture is friendlier to the environment and more sustainable than high-yielding (intensive) farming systems. In this week's Commentary, Anthony Trewavas of the University of Edinburgh, UK, argues that the lack of scientific studies of 'organic' technology means that this claim cannot be substantiated. Integrated farm management, says Trewavas, is a better way forward than full conversion to organic agriculture. This method combines the best of traditional farming with responsible use of modern technology by integrating care of the environment with safe, efficient methods of production.
