Yalelaan 1, 3584 CL Utrecht, The Netherlands s.s.stout@vet.uu.nl
In
1989, Dr. Stout graduated from Wye College, University of London with
an honours degree in Animal Sciences. For 3 years she worked as a research
assistant at the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) Equine Fertility
Unit (EFU), in Newmarket, Suffolk, UK. She then started a PhD at the
University of Cambridge, for which she investigated 'Maternal immune
responses to the equine trophoblast'. This work was carried out at the
Equine Fertility Unit in Newmarket, under the supervision of Professor
W.R. 'Twink' Allen. While working in Newmarket she also participated
in projects that investigated aspects of reproduction in a number of
exotic mammalian species, including the african elephant, african and
sumatran rhino and Old World, or dromedary, camelids.
After graduating from Cambridge, Dr. Stout carried out two short postdoctoral
research projects. The first, directed by Professor Allen, investigated
placentation and fetal gonad development in the african elephant, and
was carried out in collaboration with Professor John Skinner, then Director
of the Mammal Research Institute (MRI), and Professor Rudi van Aarde
from the Department of Zoology, both within the University of Pretoria,
South Africa. The second project investigated the development of the
chorionic girdle on the early equine conceptus and was directed by Dr.
Francesca Stewart of The Babraham Institute, near Cambridge. On completing
these projects, Dr. Stout moved out of laboratory based research and
into scientific publishing, working as an editor for R&W Publications,
Newmarket, Suffolk.
In 1999, Dr. Stout moved to Utrecht in The Netherlands, where she is
working as the Managing Editor for the online current awareness journal,
Veterinary Sciences Tomorrow.
